The power of bringing home THE WILD

What are your favorite memories in nature from childhood?

For me, it was going to Hollywood Beach in South Florida. I spent almost every weekend there, collecting shells for hours, discovering sea turtle nests, and wandering through the mangrove plants.

I don’t use this term lightly, and it was a magical experience that called to something deep within me and never got old. Being surrounded by this natural world, the crashing of the massive ocean, the fish gently swimming around my toes and crabs dashing around my feet - reminded me… I am not the only living thing here.

Nature has this power to put things in perspective. To take us out of our narrow focus on our day to day problems and remind us we’re apart of something grander. "

And when we’re surrounded by built environments all day, it can be easy to forget that.

That’s what fueled the need for Biophilic Design - which is the practice of incorporating natural elements into our built environments to increase our health, happiness & wellbeing by strengthening our connection to the natural world. Throughout most of our evolution as a human species, our ability to thrive has depended on our living in harmony with nature - and that’s now apart of our DNA that will never change.

The good news is - there are all kinds of ways we can incorporate nature into our spaces that are easy, playful, and will infuse your brain with those feel good vibes you get every time you step into the natural world.

I was reminded of that when I walked into The Greenhouse recently - a plant, floral & design studio in Baltimore, MD and I wanted to share some inspiration with you!

Incorporating nature into your home can be as easy as collecting found objects from your favorite environments and creating art or decor out of them.

In The Greenhouse - I found all kinds of beautiful things that sparked my curiosity and left me with that same child-like sense of wonder I found at the beach.

How can you tap into the power of nature in your space?

It could be as easy as…

  • bringing home driftwood from a hike you take and putting it on a shelf.

  • collecting shells from your next beach trip and placing them in a decorative vase or bowl.

  • drying flowers or leaves you find and framing them as art.

  • incorporating crystals or special rocks in a beautiful display.

  • printing photos from one of your favorite natural places and hanging them in a visible spot.

These simple gestures to reconnect to nature every day can have a PROFOUND effect. While I could go through a vast list of benefits like lower blood pressure, improved creativity & cognition, less stress, etc, etc… the biggest and most meaningful impact I’ve found is this:

Being surrounded by nature reminds me that I’m part of a magnificent, interconnected Universe that’s more powerful and creative than I could ever imagine. It reminds me to surrender, to trust, and to lean into the divine design that goes into creating every single plant, animal, rock, human on this planet.
